Chain Grocery Supermarkets

Whole Foods Market ($$$)

Whole Foods is best known for their organic food products. It is one of the more expensive chain supermarkets in Toronto. There are very few locations and the distribution of the stores around the city aren’t very widespread. They offer ready made foods within the store and bulk purchases for their nuts, grain, spices and other similar products. They also provide dietary options that range from vegan and keto-friendly to halal. In-store shopping and curbside pick is available for shoppers who need it and you could enjoy the benefits of their prime membership program. 

Metro ($$)

Metro is a candian based supermarket. The prices of their product are more on the expensive end but they have many locations within Toronto.  A special service that Metro offers is catering as well as that they also offer a wide range of dietary options including: keto, kosher, halal, gluten-free and more. Metro offers both in-store shopping and curbside pickup. For those who travel a lot, Metro has air miles reward points. 

Food Basics ($)

Food Basics is a cheaper alternative to Metro being owned by the same parent company. There are over ten locations around the outer areas of Toronto. Unlike their sister company Food Basics doesn’t offer catering services nor does it have a membership program. Not as many dietary options are provided and in-store is the only way to shop.

Loblaws ($$$)

Loblaw’s is the largest supermarket chain in Canada. There are over ten locations in Toronto, which are most abundant on the east side of the city. Loblaw’s offers dietitian, medical and pharmaceutical services. They offer halal and plant-based products for those who need certain dietary options. They offer delivery services but they also have curbside pickup and in-store shopping. Loblaw’s also uses the PC optimum rewards card program.

Fortinos ($$)

Fortino’s is affiliated with Loblaws. They share similar services and products. The most significant difference between the two is the locations of the stores, which are more abundantly found in the GTA.

NoFrills ($)

Nofrills has over ten widespread locations in Toronto. This supermarket chain is owned by (Loblaws) but prices its products at a lower cost as a cheaper option of the two. Pharmaceutical services are available in select NoFrills. Dietary wise, NoFrills has some available Halal options for shoppers if needed. Select stores have available curbside and/or delivery but all stores have in-store shopping. 

Longo's ($$$)

Though Longo’s has multiple locations, many of them are located around the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Longo’s offers a variety of services such as catering, cooking classes, online shopping and more. As of now, their best-known dietary option is halal meats. Longo’s has its own rewards program with a necessary sign-up. They offer delivery, curbside pickup and in-store shopping. 

Costco ($$)

Costco is a retail corporation that specializes in wholesale. There are six locations within Toronto, although they aren't very widespread, but including the GTA there are over ten locations. Costco offers bulk purchasing for the wide variety of products they sell ranging from groceries and lifestyle to electronics. Costco offers in-store shopping and pickup as well as delivery in select stores. A Costco membership card is also available to benefits and deals.

Sobey's ($$)

Sobeys is the second-largest food retailer in Canada. There are over ten locations in Toronto that mostly reside in the downtown area. Along with their food products, Sobeys also provides pharmaceutical services as well as having food platter specials for purchase. Sobeys doesn’t offer any delivery services but they provide both in-store shopping and pickup. 

FreshCo ($)

FreshCo is a chain of supermarkets owned by Sobeys that offers products and a greater discount. They have multiple locations around Toronto which all offer in-store shopping.
